Although I used to use Google Analytics, I have permanently removed it and I no longer use any 3rd party web analytics services on this site. I now use Piwik (analytics software) on all parts of my site. It gathers very detailed information about your browsing behaviour and I can even play back recordings of your mouse movements as you navigate and read (DOM recordings). It is hosted on my server and all the data is collected in a database on my server where it remains. I am the only person who has access to it and I use it to find out what works and what doesn't and to make improvements to the site accordingly. I have never and will never share or sell your data to anyone else ever, except when compelled to do so by law.
I do not support any kind of advertising on any part of my site, unless you count shameless self-promotion as advertising.
After doing some research into web privacy and surveillance issues, I have decided to remove any and all 3rd party software, apps, and "like" and "share" button services from this site without exception. The Google Translate, Feedburner, bookmark, etc., features are no longer available. If you would like to translate my articles, you can do so directly by copying and pasting texts to this page. If you would like to share this article on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc., simply copy and paste the URL from your browser's address bar. Since I publish all the articles on my blog under a Creative Commons Attribution and Share Alike licence, you are free to copy and paste sections or entire articles anywhere you like as long as you include a reference to the author (me).
However, I sometimes use 3rd party web conferencing services and tools and in these cases, I have no control over what information these services collect and what they do with it. I do my best to find the most ethical and trustworthy service providers possible in compliance with applicable duty of care laws.
This blog uses the popular Askimet spam detection and filtering system. It is a private 3rd party service but is only applied to comments on my blog posts to prevent spambots and unsolicited marketing. I also personally moderate all comments posted. Comments must be relevant to the content of this blog to be approved. I enjoy lively debate and encourage free speech and so I approve critical and negative as well as positive comments without prejudice.
Teachers and learners with accounts on this site help me with my research into teaching and learning approaches and the software I develop. They volunteer to participate in learner centred collaborative activities which often generate a variety of essays, written discussions, presentations, recordings, etc. This teacher and learner generated content remains the intellectual property of its authors. None of their content or data is visible to the public. It is available to them on request at any time and while they are teaching and/or studying they have unrestricted access to it. Although I regularly make copies for backup purposes, I will never republish or use the content without the owners' explicit permission in writing, and with a clear explanation about what content it is and why, except when compelled to do so by law. Teachers and learners are always asked without coercion and permitted to refuse without prejudice.
This site only requires names, emails and personal information where it is absolutely necessary, i.e. teachers, learners and clients who have accounts on my site. They are stored on secure databases with substantial security measures in place and the security measures are regularly updated. I have never and will never share or sell this information to anyone else, except for when I have individuals' explicit permission in writing on a case by case basis each time I want to share any information with anyone, with a clear explanation about what information it is, with whom and why, except when compelled to do so by law.
